Designed before it's bought
We start with a walkthrough and a list of what you want to control. Then we pick hardware to fit that list. Do it the other way round and you end up with four apps and three hubs.
The wall switch always still works
Every automated circuit keeps a physical switch that works with the hub offline, the Wi-Fi down and the app uninstalled. Automation should add options. It should never take any away.
Retrofit or new build
In new construction we run the control wiring at the conduit stage. It's cheaper and it's completely hidden. In a house you're already living in we use retrofit modules behind the existing switch plates, so the walls stay shut.
